What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition that affects both children and adults. Often diagnosed in childhood, it can persist into adulthood sometimes without ever being recognized.

Symptoms commonly include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, making everyday tasks and interactions more challenging.

Symptoms of ADHD

Symptoms of ADHD may present themselves differently in children and adults. Adults may have subconsciously found ways to deal with or hide their disorder to fit into social and professional settings, while children do not yet possess those skills.

While most school-aged children have high activity levels and difficulty sitting still for prolonged periods, children with ADHD will have symptoms that are noticeably greater than their peers.

Symptoms of ADHD may be broken into two categories:

  • Inattentive Type: Trouble focusing, forgetfulness, disorganization, appearing not to listen
  • Hyperactive/Impulsive Type: Fidgeting, interrupting, restlessness, excessive talking

If you recognize signs of either type in yourself or a loved one, our team can help guide you toward a diagnosis and personalized care.

What Causes ADHD?

While scientists haven’t pinpointed a single cause of ADHD, research suggests that genetics may play a significant role. In fact, three out of four children diagnosed with ADHD have a relative who also shows signs of the condition.

Other possible factors being studied include brain structure, environmental exposures during pregnancy, and early development. While the exact cause remains unknown, what matters most is early identification and the right support.
