Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Living with intrusive thoughts or the urge to repeat certain behaviors can feel overwhelming and exhausting. At Mile High Psychiatry, we provide compassionate, evidence-based care for OCD, combining therapy and medication to help patients regain peace of mind and freedom from compulsions.

What is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that affects individuals of all ages. It’s defined by a cycle of unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that feel difficult to control.
For someone with OCD, this cycle can be distressing, time-consuming, and disruptive to daily life and relationships.
Obsessions & Compulsions
OCD involves two key components: obsessions and compulsions.
Obsessions are persistent, intrusive thoughts or urges such as fears about contamination, harm, or needing things to be “just right.” These thoughts cause significant anxiety.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or rituals meant to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions. Common examples include:
- Cleaning: Excessive washing or avoidance due to fear of germs or contamination
- Repeating: Saying words or performing actions multiple times to “neutralize” a fear
- Checking: Constantly verifying doors, stoves, or locks to prevent harm
- Ordering: Arranging items until they feel “perfect” or symmetrical

Our OCD-Focused Providers

What Causes OCD?
The exact cause of OCD isn’t fully understood, but research points to several contributing factors:
- Differences in brain chemistry or function
- Genetic or hereditary influences
- Environmental stressors or trauma
- Personality traits like perfectionism or high anxiety
OCD often begins in adolescence or early adulthood but no matter when it starts, support is available.

How We Treat OCD
At Mile High Psychiatry, we offer a combination of therapy and medication tailored to each individual’s needs. Many patients benefit from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly exposure and response prevention (ERP), which is considered the gold standard for OCD.
When appropriate, medication may also be used to reduce the intensity of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
Our goal is to help you or your loved one regain control, reduce distress, and improve quality of life.
