What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress and uncertainty. It can even be helpful—motivating us to prepare, stay alert, and avoid danger. But when anxiety becomes overwhelming, constant, or interferes with daily life, it may be an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting both adults and children. With the right care and support, most people with anxiety can learn to manage symptoms and thrive.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety can show up in different ways depending on the individual. While symptoms often include overwhelming worry or fear, they can vary by type and age.

Some of the most common anxiety disorders include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Ongoing worry about daily life, often paired with fatigue, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating.
  • Panic Disorder: Sudden panic attacks with physical symptoms like chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and dizziness.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations.
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder: Often seen in children, this involves intense fear when away from someone they’re attached to.

Anxiety may feel different for everyone, but you’re never alone in managing it—and effective treatment is available.

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety disorders don’t have a single cause they can develop from a mix of genetics, brain chemistry, and life experiences. Family history, childhood trauma, and chronic stress can all increase your risk.

While you can’t always control the factors that lead to anxiety, you can control how you manage it. With the right support, anxiety is highly treatable.

Therapist providing support

How We Treat Anxiety

At Mile High Psychiatry, we create personalized care plans for anxiety using a mix of behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and when appropriate medication.

Therapy can help patients better understand their triggers and build tools to manage anxious thoughts. Medication may be prescribed short-term to support stability while therapy takes root.

We work with each patient individually to find what works best because no one’s anxiety looks exactly the same.
